I cough a lot in the morning and bring up a lot of phlegm, though I can never get it up all the way and it ends up being swallowed (yuck!).MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY CHAPTER 8 PATHOLOGIES Term In any case, when I was in the hospital with pneumonia, a doctor had said that it sounded like I may have chronic bronchitis, given the frequency in which I get bronchitis and the fact that it never seems to completely go away. The test I had was just blowing into the machine. I've read that to test for asthma, they will do the test, have you inhale a bronchodilator, and then retest your PFTs to see if there's a change. I should also mention that the first PFTs I had back in January did not involve inhaling a bronchodilator. I am going for PFTs with a methacholine challenge tomorrow, and I took it upon myself to schedule an appt with a pulmonologist, given that I tend to be a complicated case. He sent me for a chest x-ray to be sure that the pneumonia is all clear, and the x-ray came back normal. But I hate how shaky I feel after taking it, so I have to be wheezing/coughing pretty badly in order to use it. I do have a rescue inhaler, ProAir, which I respond quite well to when I use it. He said that he thinks it's asthma, which he has actually said quite a few times in the past. He listened to my chest and said my lungs sounded tight. I decided to call my PCP and see what he though, but he asked me to come in for an appt. I cough quite a bit and bring up quite a bit of phlegm during the day, and the wheezing/crackling is mainly at night. Sometimes the wheezing is a whistling sound other times it sounds like rice krispies in my chest and is more like a crackling sound. Over the past couple of weeks, I've noticed that I'm coughing and wheezing again. But then again, I have been so busy that I honestly haven't been paying attention. It was a slow recovery at first, but I hadn't noticed much, if any, wheezing anymore, and the coughing seemed to subside. It's been nearly 3 months since I was in the hospital. I was rushed to the hospital by ambulance where I spent 6 days on IV antibiotics. I got sick with what appeared to be bronchitis in May, but it eventually developed into pneumonia. That came back normal, as did a CT scan of my chest. My rheumatologist was concerned about interstitial lung disease related to the methotrexate that I am taking, so he sent me for PFTs. Towards the end of last year, I developed a cough that lasted for a couple of months. I have dealt with recurrent bronchitis infections, at least 3 times per year, for the past couple of years. I am on immunosuppressants for the psoriatic arthritis and am in quite a flare at the present time. I am 31 years old with a slew of health problems, including psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis, NASH (liver disease), osteoarthritis, GERD, gastritis, DDD, iritis, retinal tears, and suspected WPW (a heart condition).
